Sciatica...so many causes, so little time
What is sciatica?
Sciatica is a term used to describe pain, pins and needles and/or numbness running down the back of one or both legs. It is often caused by something in the lumbar spine or low back region impinging the sciatic nerve.
What causes sciatica?
Sciatica is caused by irritation or damage to the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve starts in the lower back and extends all the way to the toes. The picture below shows the path of the nerve through the lower back and legs.
Most commonly the nerve is affected in the lumbar spine either by spinal discs or the vertebrae. A disc protrusion or “slipped disc”, osteo arthritis, spinal degeneration and muscle spasm can all irritate and compress the sciatic nerve.
Treatment will vary and depends on the cause of your sciatica. The Chiropractor at Dubbo Spine Centre will use different methods of treatment based on the cause of your condition, and of course your preference. Treatment usually involves some soft-tissue/massage-type work, and some gentle chiropractic manipulations to the low back, hip, and pelvic regions typically. Each treatment session will be unique, and we will use the best modalities and techniques to get you back into action.
If you have any questions or are unsure if the chiropractic treatment is right for you, please contact the clinic and we will answer any questions you may have.
